Here are the main ways that electric and diesel forklifts differ in their design and how they are powered.  

Electric Forklifts 

Electric lifts are available in sit-down and stand-up models. Their compact design and tight turning radius of the standup models offer better maneuverability in tight spaces. They run on rechargeable batteries—typically lead-acid or lithium-ion—that power an electric motor. To keep them operational and avoid interruptions to workflow, you’ll need an electric charging station or battery swap in place.  

Diesel Forklifts 

Diesel forklifts are usually sit-down models. They are popular because of their power and durability in demanding environments and how well they perform in rough, uneven terrain. These heavy-duty vehicles are powered primarily by Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), a cleaner burning fuel with a sulfur content of no more than 15 parts per million or less. There is no charging involved, but you’ll need a place to store and dispense the diesel fuel.

Primary Types of Diesel Trucks 

Diesel forklifts are divided into two main categories based on the kind of tires they use and environments in which they are designed to operate. The categories are internal combustion (IC) cushion trucks and internal combustion (IC) pneumatic trucks:   

  • IC Cushion Tire Forklifts: These forklifts use press-on cushion tires that are used for smooth indoor floors. Compact and capable of handling heavy loads, IC cushion forklifts are ideal for warehouses, manufacturing plants, and other indoor material handling applications. 
  • IC Pneumatic Tire Forklifts: These heavy-duty lifts use pneumatic tires filled with air or are made with solid rubber to handle uneven or rugged terrain. Their heavy-duty design paired with resilient tires make IC pneumatic tire forklifts a popular choice among industries such as construction, oil & gas, outdoor warehousing, and agriculture.
